A long time Southern staple, the Haint Blue porch ceiling, is at once, attractive, bright, and useful (for warding off haints). This soft blue ideal goes with southern porches like a long afternoon and a pitcher of sweet tea.
The HIstory of The perfect haint blue
The origins of Haint Blue are thought to come from the Gullah people of South Carolina and Georgia. They believed that this group of blues, teals, and blue-greens evoked the color of water. It was believed that ghosts wouldn't or couldn't cross this color and would move on. Porches, ceilings, trim, and shutters were painted this color in hopes of keeping these "haints" at bay.
I have been working on a couple (thousand) projects around the property here. One being the screened in back porch and the other my office. Both ceilings were fair game this year. The porch ceiling mostly falling down required a total rehab and the office ceiling just maybe hadn't been painted in the last 60 years or so. I decided on Haint blue for both!
Original to the plans of the house, was a screened in porch where the office sits now. Somewhere along the last 60 years, the porch was converted into an enclosed space with French doors and windows, along two walls. Haint Blue in here is the perfect compliment to my already soft teal scheme.
I still have a few days worth of work on the porch and then we will have a big reveal here on the blog. This has been a really exciting project.
I headed to Home Depot recently, hoping to snag a few samples to show you. I found eight perfect Haint Blue swatches that I loved!
ETHEREAL MOOD | BREEZEWAY | SKYLIGHT VIEW | DAYFLOWER | CASCADE GREEN | COSMIC BLUE | AQUIFER | SCHOONER | SONATA
These are all really perfect. A couple of them tend toward green but in person, the samples look very watery. Perfect for keeping those Haints away. Speaking of keeping things away, there has been talk over the years about these colors keeping away insects like wasps. Nope.
My Haint blue brings all the wasps to the yard. Even with the screen...screening.
My favorite swatch above is probably Cascade Green or maybe Aquifer. Home Depot is offering free in-store pick up at your local store, so make sure you order ahead. No one wants to stand at the paint counter for an hour and wait. Not me at least. Behr Marquee is only offered at Home Depot. They also offer free shipping on most orders over $45.00.
